Nonlinear formulation of the magnetic field to source relationship for robust quantitative susceptibility mapping

Abstract: Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) opens the door for measuring tissue magnetic susceptibility properties that may be important biomarkers, and QSM is becoming an increasingly active area of scientific and clinical investigations. In practical applications, there are sources of errors for QSM including noise, phase unwrapping failures, and signal model inaccuracy. To improve the robustness of QSM quality, we propose a nonlinear data fidelity term for frequency map estimation and dipole inversion to redu… Show more

“…The spatial variation of the induced heterogeneity due to microstructure is closely linked to the underlying fiber orientation. More sophisticated inversion methods that incorporate edge priors and noise reduction strategies (12,46) may reduce this unwanted heterogeneity, but are unlikely to remove it completely. Also, many of the structures exhibiting large microstructure effects, such as the splenium and optic radiation, can appear in the edge-based priors used by these algorithms, and therefore may be particularly difficult to remove.…”

“…19 After the complex multiecho MR images were saved, a nonlinear fitting was performed to estimate the magnetic field inhomogeneity, followed by a magnitude-guided phase unwrapping. 20 The background field was further removed by applying the projection to the dipole fields method. 26 Finally, the remaining tissue field was inverted to generate a susceptibility map by using the morphology enabled dipole inversion method.…”

“…26 Finally, the remaining tissue field was inverted to generate a susceptibility map by using the morphology enabled dipole inversion method. 20 An empirically determined regularization parameter of 1000 was consistently applied to all cases. All 11 echoes were used with weightings proportional to their signal-to-noise ratios for reconstructing QSM and R2*.…”
