Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Humanistic Psychology

Abstract: The recent debunking by Brown, Sokal, & Friedman (2013) of some high profile results applying chaos theory to positive psychology (i.e., Fredrickson & Losada, 2005) creates the opportunity to shed light on the quality work that has been done by others in this area. Too many humanists may be unaware of the large volume of legitimate work that exists in the literature apart from Fredrickson & Losada's (2005) paper. Often,, such legitimate lines of research are ignored, not measuring topological processes). Next,… Show more

“…The highly interdependent nature of nonlinear dynamical systems also means that system‐level behavior constrains and guides the behavior of its component processes through reciprocal feedback. A classic example arises in social interactions, where the interactions of people result in the formation of relationships and interpersonal roles, which in turn regulate individual behavior (Pincus, Keifer, & Beyer, ; cf. Pincus, ).…”

“…As people evolve, so their stories may evolve and thus their narrative identity is open to change (McAdams, 1985; Ricoeur, 1991). The individual can be viewed as a complex adaptive system (Butz, 1997; Rickles et al, 2007; Pincus et al, 2018). This term refers to the complex non-linear nature of the individual, the adaptive evolutionary manner of personal change, and the interconnectedness of the various parts that comprise the individual as a system (Guastello and Liebovitch, 2009).…”

“…NDS principles allow for a more thorough integration of the sciences and a better understanding of how physical, social, and metaphysical sciences can interact and be interdependent (Pincus et al, 2017). Through NDS, change can occur continually over time (Guastello & Gregson, 2016) as a person interacts with the outside world.…”

“…Although Western medicine focuses on the process of reductionism (Verhoef et al, 2005), the NDS approach emphasizes nonlinear change as the basis of complementary and alternative medicine practice. The nonlinear approach to health care change and the MTM approach are delineated in Table 1 (Guastello & Gregson, 2016;Higgins, 2002;Pincus et al, 2017;Ritenbaugh et al, 2003). The nonlinear approach comprises five elements of change: attractor, chaos, perturbance/entropy, perturber, and fractals (Kirshbaum, 1998).…”
