Nonlinear Coupler for Optical Fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

Abstract: In this article the equations for two waves propagating in two fibers of nonlinear Kerr coupler for optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer are derived. Based on the resolution of those equations, the expressions describing relation between coherent length, input intensity of the wave, nonlinear coefficient of refractive index for 3dB Kerr coupler are introduced and discussed.

“…The main purpose of this proposal is to use only one laser source in operating of Two-port NFMZI replacing to use two laser sources: one for pumping and other for controlling in the classical Four-port nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer. As shown in previous work [10], the equation describes the output-input relation of intensities of Two-port NFMZI is given by…”

“…The previous OBDs are used in active mediums such as gas, liquid, but their dimension is too big. With the advantages in nano-semiconductor technology and optical fiber, the dimension of them is reduced more and more to nano-scale [5,6,7,8,9]. In the previous work [10], the transmittance as well as the bistability of Two-port nonlinear fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (NFMZI) have been investigated and discussed.…”

“…Still now, the bistability characteristic of it, that depends on the principle parameters has not been completely investigated. Based on the results of our previous works [14], the influence of principle parameters on bistability characteristic of the TPNFMZI is simulated and discussed. The expression describing the relation between output and input intensities of the TPNFMZI is as follows [14] I out = I in × − (2η 2 − 1) (…”
