Nonlinear Analysis on Flexural Behavior of RC Beam Strengthened with CFRP Sheets on Lateral Side

Abstract: The technology of strengthening RC beam with CFRP sheets is now a hotspot of research in civil engineering. The FEM analysis was made for the whole deformation course of the flexural behavior of RC beam with CFRP sheets on lateral side, and the result was coincided with the experimental results.

“…Previous literatures [5][6][7][8][9] indicated that although RC beams strengthened with side bonded FRP shows different failure modes in the test, the concrete and FRP strain basically keep in a straight line on the same cross section. So it is concluded that the average strain of the cross-section of the side bonded FRP strengthened beams is linear distribution in a certain scale range.…”

“…When pipelines, circuitries, walls and other obstacles go through the bottom of RC beams, it is difficult to strengthen beams with bottom bonded FRP sheets (hereinafter referred to as "bottom bonded"), so in this case, the method of side bonded FRP sheets (hereinafter referred to as "side bonded") to strengthen beams should be applied. As for the studies on the flexural behavior of RC beams externally strengthened with FRP, the researches at home and abroad mainly focused on the bottom bonded FRP [1][2][3][4], rare attempt is made to strengthen RC beams with side bonded FRP [5][6][7][8][9], moreover, the comparative study of the both is even more scarce [5] [9].In order to compare and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the two strengthening methods in the respect of improving the flexural behavior , it is necessary to make a comparative study on the strengthening effect of the two methods, which can provide reference for the engineering practice.…”
