Nonlinear Aircraft Model Identification and Validation for a Fault-Tolerant Flight Control System

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a parameter identification study for determining a mathematical model of the WVU YF-22 unmanned research aircraft under both nominal and actuator failure conditions to simulate malfunctions on primary control surfaces. Specifically, both linear and nonlinear mathematical models were derived from measured flight data acquired from pilot and automated computer-injected maneuvers under nominal and failure conditions. From analysis, the stability and control derivatives were extr… Show more

“…In accordance with the Newton's third law of action and reaction, the thrust for an airplane has to be generated, to enable it to be accelerated, to compensate for all drags and resistances, and to fly in a steady attitude. This thrust is to be generated by the available engines [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…This makes it possible to achieve a reliable operation and seamless flight mode switching. The Gen-V avionics design builds upon several earlier generations of WVU avionics that supported a variety of research topics such as aircraft Parameter Identification (PID) (Phillips et al, 2010), formation flight control (Gu et al, 2009), fault-tolerant flight control (Perhinschi et al, 2005), and sensor fusion .…”
