За допомогою розробленої математич-ної моделі виконано аналіз процесу охоло-дження екструдованої полімерної плівки на барабані із внутрішнім охолодженням. Досліджено залежність середньої темпе-ратури полімерної плівки за умови вихо-ду барабана на стаціонарний (усталений) тепловий режим. Показано, що зі збільшен-ням товщини плівки та (або) зменшенням швидкості необхідно враховувати прогрів барабана під час його попередніх обертів до виходу на стаціонарний режим Ключові слова: екструзія, плоска полі-мерна плівка, охолодний барабан, устале-ний тепловий режим, температурне поле С помощью разработанной математи-ческой модели выполнен анализ процесса охлаждения экструдируемой полимерной плёнки на барабане с внутренним охлаж-дением. Исследована зависимость сред-ней температуры полимерной плёнки при условии выхода барабана на стационар-ный (установившийся) тепловой режим. Abstract. In this work, viscoelastic, isothermal extrusion film casting modeling utilizing 1D membrane model and modified Leonov model was performed in order to understand the role of viscoelastic stress state at the die exit on the polymer melt film stretching in the post die area. Experimental data for LDPE and theoretical predictions based on the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model taken from the open literature were used for the validation purposes. It was found that predicting capabilities of 1D membrane model utilizing XPP and modified Leonov model are comparable for the given processing conditions and material. Consequent theoretical parametric study revealed that increase in the viscoelastic stress state at the die exit, characterized as the ratio of second and first normal stress differences, -N 2 /N 1 , leads to increase in neck-in phenomenon. This suggests that specific attention should be paid to optimization of the extrusion die design in order to stabilize polymer melt film stretching in the post die area.

Extrusion film casting of long chain branched polypropylene

Extrusion film casting (EFC) is an important melt processing operation which is extensively used to make polypropylene (PP) films. Linear PP shows significant amount of necking and draw resonance during EFC. One of the ways to reduce necking is to introduce long chain branches (LCB) on the polymer backbone. The long branches impart extensional strain hardening behavior thereby stabilizing the melt flow. In this work, we investigate the influence of long chain branching in polypropylene on the extent of necking in the EFC process. Laboratory scale EFC experiments were performed on homopolymer PP of linear and long chain branched architectures. Simulations of the EFC process were carried out using the one‐dimensional flow model of Silagy et al., Polym. Eng. Sci., 36, 2614 (1996) into which we incorporate two different multi‐mode molecular constitutive equations namely, the ‘eXtended Pom‐Pom’ equation (XPP, for long chain branched PP) and the ‘Rolie‐Poly’ equation (RP‐S, for linear PP). Our experimental data confirm that presence of long chain branching in PP reduces the extent of necking and our numerical predictions show qualitative agreement with experimental data, thereby elucidating the role of chain architecture on the extent of necking.
