Noninvasive Diagnosis of Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis

Abstract: Fifty‐five patients with clinical signs of acute DVT were investigated with thermography, plethysmography and phlebography. A comparison between phlebography and thermography showed a diagnostic agreement of 84%. Thermography was found, however, to have a low reliability for the localization of acute thrombi and was therefore combined with plethysmography in an attempt to obtain better results in this respect. Compared to the invasive phlebography, the noninvasive combination of thermography and plethysmograph… Show more

“…The specificity of thermography in our study was lower than in previous reports (16,(19)(20)(21)(22). This may be due mainly to two factors: a high incidence of inflammatory conditions simulating DVT, and the unwillingness of some patients with a negative 9 c "plasmin test to undergo phlebography who were thus excluded.…”

“…Several groups have found thermography to be highly sensitive for diagnosing DVT, with sensitivity values of 89-96% (16,(19)(20)(21)(22). The sensitivity of thermography in the present study was only 77% (when score 2 was positive).…”

“…Historically, traditional contrast venography, based on direct lower leg intravenous contrast injection, was used as the first objective imaging modality and for many years had been considered the "gold standard" for diagnosis of DVT 1037,1038 . Before the modern VUS era, due to limitations concerning other available diagnostic methods, including plethysmography, thermography, continuous wave Doppler examination or isotopic studies, phlebography became another standard diagnostic imaging method to confirm DVT [1039][1040][1041][1042][1043][1044] . The rates of diagnosed DVT by bilateral venography in orthopaedic surgery studies became the reference values for further research on DVT prophylaxis efficacy in orthopaedic surgery.…”

“…The combination of thermography and plethysmography increases sensitivity and specificity [97], and this combination has been used for DVT screening after kidney transplantation [98,99].…”
