Noninvasive determination of myocardial blood flow, oxygen consumption and efficiency in normal humans by carbon-11 acetate positron emission tomography imaging

Abstract: The aims of this study were: (1) to measure noninvasively and near simultaneously myocardial blood flow, oxygen consumption, and contractile function and (2) to analyze myocardial energy expenditure and efficiency at rest and during dobutamine stress in normal humans. Dynamic and gated carbon-11 acetate positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was performed in 11 normal subjects. The initial uptake of (11)C-acetate was measured to estimate myocardial blood flow. Oxygen consumption was derived from the monoex… Show more

“…In contrast to the above, mechanical conversion efficiency remained unaltered between groups and was fairly consistent with investigations in healthy adults [34,35]. This indicates that, despite impaired PVA due to inefficient energetics, the transferral ratio from energy production to effective work is preserved.…”

“…In this paper we describe a rest/stress [ 11 C]acetate PET imaging protocol that can effectively yield measurement of the myocardial blood flow [3,4,6,[24][25][26] [30]. Another approach was to use [ 13 N]ammonia with dipyridamole to investigate the effect of long-terms inhibition of the angiotensin converting enzyme or Beta blocker [31].…”

“…The complete model for myocardial 1-11 C-acetate kinetics based on known biochemical pathways was published previously (13,14,25,26). For the prostate, the kinetic model has not been elucidated.…”
