Noninvasive and minimally invasive techniques for the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases

Abstract: Allergic diseases of the (upper and lower) airways, the skin and the gastrointestinal tract, are on the rise, resulting in impaired quality of life, decreased productivity, and increased healthcare costs. As allergic diseases are mostly tissue‐specific, local sampling methods for respective biomarkers offer the potential for increased sensitivity and specificity. Additionally, local sampling using noninvasive or minimally invasive methods can be cost‐effective and well tolerated, which may even be suitable for… Show more

“…The members of the SCGB family are easily accessible, chemically stable, and abundant in several biomatrices (serum, BALF, nasopharyngeal fluids, urine, exhaled breath condensate 69 ). Since they can be detected in many secretory tissues, they have a high potential as biomarkers for diagnostic and prognostic assessment as well as for therapy monitoring.…”

“…This concept postulates that the upper and lower airways form a morphological and functional unit, sharing common features related to physical barrier, mucociliary clearance and immune processes. These mechanisms can be studied in the lower airways using induced sputum samples, which consists of components derived from the respiratory epithelium of the central airways 10–12 …”

“…These mechanisms can be studied in the lower airways using induced sputum samples, which consists of components derived from the respiratory epithelium of the central airways. [10][11][12] MicroRNAs (miRs) are small nucleic acid molecules that suppress gene expression post-transcriptionally and therefore via an epigenetic mechanism. 13 Individual miRs can have wide-ranging regulatory functions, as they can each target multiple mRNA transcripts along a particular signalling pathway.…”

“…112 Thorough endotyping of AE patients would be very efficient and cost-effective for treatment. 113 One possible method would be tape stripping, which successfully revealed multiple AE markers in a current study. 114 Biomarkers are essential for diagnosis and personalized and tailored therapy, especially in a multifaceted disease as AE.…”
