Nonideal plasmas as non-equilibrium media

Molecular Simulation

An attempt is made to formulate a set of requirements for simulation and modelling of relaxation in dense media. Each requirement is illustrated by examples of numerical simulation of particles with different types of interaction given by softsphere, Lennard -Jones, embedded atom method or Coulomb potential. The approaches developed are expected to be universal for some classes of relaxation processes in liquids, fluids, crystals and plasmas.

Abstract. Approaches to simulation and modeling of relaxation in dense media are developed which would be universal for some classes of relaxation processes. Three examples of relaxation in strongly dissimilar multi-scale systems are considered: equilibration of electrons and ions in a nonisothermal nonideal plasma, lifetime and nucleation of crystals at superheating, void formation in a crystal under negative pressures.

Self-consistent joint description of free and weakly bound electron states in plasmas is considered. Existence of two problems is emphasized: restriction of the number of atomic excited states and description of the smooth crossover from bound pair electron-ion excited states to collective excitations of free electrons. The spectrum domain intermediate between low-lying excited atoms and free electron continuous energy levels is studied. Density and nonideality effects are separated. The density effects are predominant for the shape of the curve of the energy spectrum near the ionization limit. It corresponds to the suppression of spectral lines in ideal multicharge plasma of warm dense matter. A suppression of collisional recombination turns out to be a nonideality effect. The suppression agrees with the measurements for ultracold plasmas and warm dense matter.
