Animals are exposed to high levels of anthropogenic disturbance, which has profound consequences for population persistence. Individuals can adjust their behavior plastically when faced with perturbations in their environment and may show consistent differences in the way they perceive and respond to risky situations. Over time, this variability among individuals in response to risk can affect the dynamics of populations exposed to human disturbance. Thus, understanding how animals cope behaviorally with human disturbance is important, especially for species vulnerable to human perturbations, such as turtles. In this context, we evaluated whether risk‐taking behaviors are consistent within individual painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and assessed how these behaviors are related to the extent of human disturbance along the Rideau Canal, Ontario, Canada. Specifically, we conducted repeated measurements of the number of active defensive behaviors used during handling and the time taken to escape a floating platform for 730 painted turtles (1117 observations) from 22 sites varying in human disturbance along the canal. We also quantified the emergence of the turtles from the water after escaping the platform. First, individual painted turtles showed consistent differences in all risk‐taking behaviors. Second, painted turtles in areas with high boat activity displayed more active defensive behaviors, while turtles from sites in proximity to more houses with access to the canal used fewer. Our study highlights the importance of studying animal behavior to better understand the impact of human activities on animal populations.

The purpose of this research is to find outthe values of Islamic education and science learning are integrated in the 1000 Hajat oil jeleng tradition at the Thohir Yasin Islamic Boarding School Lendang Nangka, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This research is a qualitative research. The selected informants are the chairman of the foundation and the perpetrators of making oil jars and have directly experienced the effects of complementary medicine using oil jars. Data collection techniques are observation, in-depth interviews and documentary studies.Observations were made on the activity of making jeleng oil among Thohir Yasin Islamic boarding schools. The results of the research show that during the manufacture of jeleng oil accompanied by readings that are adjusted according to the stages, then continue reading the prayers. At the start of the warm-up until it finishes reading the letters are Yasin, Assajadah, Addukhan, Almulk which are read continuously. Science lessons that can be obtained from the process of making Jeleng Oil are from the materials used contain various chemical substances and there are physical changes in its manufacture. Jeng oil has also been shown to be able to treat various diseases based on the effectiveness of chemical compounds from various ingredients, namely coconut, senna leaves and saffron

The primary function of animal nests is to protect developing offspring from hostile and fluctuating environments. Animal builders have been shown to adjust nest construction in response to changes in their environment. However, the extent of this plasticity, and its dependence on an evolutionary history of environmental variability, is not well understood. To test whether an evolutionary history with flowing water impacts male ability to adjust nests in response to flow regime, we collected three-spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) from three lakes and three rivers, and brought them into reproductive condition in controlled laboratory aquaria. Males were then allowed to nest under both flowing and static conditions. Nest building behaviour, nest structure and nest composition were all recorded. In comparison to males building nests under static conditions, males building in flowing water took longer to construct their nests and invested more in nesting behaviour. Moreover, nests built in flowing water contained less material, were smaller, more compact, neater and more elongated than nests built under static conditions. Whether males came from rivers or lakes had little impact on nesting activities, or male capacity to adjust behaviours in response to flow treatment. Our findings suggest that aquatic animals which have experienced a stable environment over a long period of time retain plasticity in nest-building behaviours that allow them to adjust nests to ambient flow conditions. This ability may prove crucial in coping with the increasingly unpredictable flow regimes found in anthropogenically altered waterways and those resulting from global climate change.
