Halogen atoms (Cl and F) of 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (Freon 113) were efficiently (>99%) removed as sodium chloride and fluoride ions by treatment with sodium naphthalenide (1.5 equiv per halogen atom) in THF at 150 °C for 50 min in the presence of 10 vol % tetraethyleneglycol dimethyl ether. Similar treatment was also efficacious in the dehalogenation of Freon 22 and Freon 12.
