Nondimensional Parameters’ Effects on Hybrid Darrieus–Savonius Wind Turbine Performance

Abstract: Vertical axial wind turbines are the most commonly used turbines in residential and urban areas. This paper investigates the effect of combining Darrieus and Savonius wind turbines on power output and introduces a wind turbine with high starting torque addition to the wide working domain. A two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics transient simulation is developed, and a moving mesh is implemented for rotating moving parts. Comprehensive research has been carried out to investigate the effects of the initi… Show more

“…However, this method is not optimal because it is only effective for one direction of fluid flow. [19] conducted a CFD study on the effect of the overlap ratio of Savonius on the performance of the hybrid Savonius-Darrieus. As a result, increasing the overlap ratio can increase turbine self-starting, and an overlap ratio of 2.5 can increase 𝐶 𝑃 by 18% from the basic hybrid Savonius-Darrieus model.…”

“…To check the effectiveness of the generated models, Model Base was selected which is a hybrid Savonius-Darrieus VAWT designed and studied by Roshan [21]. Model Base, Model 1 and Model 2 were simulated and experimented at 36 different angles from 0º to 360º.…”

“…According to the mentioned literature review [38,39], it can be concluded that there is a lack of investigation into the performance of the triple-blade Savonius wind turbine. In this study, a modified triple-blade Savonius rotor at different wind velocities of 3 to 6 m/s (according to the previous relevant works [21,40]) is considered and evaluated comprehensively.…”
