Nondestructive Evaluation of Composites

Abstract: Composite structures have been used in the fabrication of aircraft structures for the past three decades. Most primary aircraft structures are made from carbon epoxy composites while fairing and antenna .ire made from fiberglass and Kevlar composites. This paper describes the application of nondestructive testing (NDT) for both fabrication and in service inspections. In fabrication, all laminate structures receive ultrasonic inspection while honeycomb parts receive additional radiographic inspection. Ultrasoni… Show more

“…This near-field approach of microwave NDE is in some aspects similar to the conventional eddy-current based techniques for defect detection and imaging in metals [3]. Of course, in non-metallic materials, it is the discontinuities in the dielectric property, instead of the electrical conductivity, that gives rise to the defect signal.…”

“…The signal characteristics of the inside coaxial sensing coil are well known to eddy current test engineers [1][2]. However, the signal characteristics of the outside parallel sensing coil have not yet been investigated in detail because such a coil configuration has been rarely used in eddy current tests.…”

“…However, the rebar size is not always known. The phase of a detected signal fails to give useful depth information because the phase versus cover depth is almost same as the phase versus size [1][2].…”

“…For example, corrosion on aircrafts is often initiated around fasteners. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] This occurs for several reasons. First, the fasteners are stress concentrators (stress can be raised by a factor of 3 2 ) and initiate more damage to the paint system at these points.…”
