Noncutaneous Melanoma Have Distinct Features from Each Other and Cutaneous Melanoma

Abstract: Objective: Compared to the cutaneous melanoma, noncutaneous melanomas are relatively rare and have a distinct pattern of behavior. We performed this study to define the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with noncutaneous melanomas and emphasize how they differ from cutaneous melanomas. Methods: 216 patients who were diagnosed with noncutaneous melanoma were assessed and their medical records between 2000 and 2010 were retrieved from the cancer registry. 475 patients with cutaneous melanoma were… Show more

“…By the time the tumor is diagnosed, the malignant cells often have invaded to a deeper level and are thus at a higher stage than the average cutaneous melanoma [6,9,22]. The 5-year survival rate varies between 15 and 20 % [4,6,23], with older age, extent of the primary tumor, poor accessibility for resection, and non-pigmented lesions contributing to a poorer outcome [19,24]. Lymph node involvement tends to have a direct negative effect on prognosis in mucosal melanomas [24].…”

“…45 The remaining 10% are composed of acral lentiginous melanoma (most commonly found on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet) and noncutaneous melanomas such as ocular and mucosal melanoma. 46 Because of their location and rarity, noncutaneous melanomas often remain undetected until they reach an advanced stage, at which time treatment options are limited and outcomes are particularly poor. Evidence of the efficacy and safety of ipilimumab in patients with these rare melanoma subtypes is limited; however, preliminary data from expanded access programs (EAPs) or single-institution studies provide some indication of activity.…”

“…7 Mucosal melanomas primarily occur in the head and neck region (eg, nasal and oral cavities), followed by the GI tract (anorectum) and female genital tract (vulva and vagina). 8,9 Accordingly, they occur at a higher incidence in females than in males. 10 Although mucosal melanomas are rare in white populations, accounting for 2% or less of all melanomas, 7,10 the incidence has been reported to be up to 23% in Chinese populations.…”
