Noncultured epidermal suspension transplantation for the treatment of stable vitiligo in children and adolescents

Abstract: Transplantation of noncultured epidermal suspension is a safe and effective treatment for stable vitiligo in childhood. Considering its good efficacy and safety as a day-care procedure under local anaesthesia, it may be considered one of the treatments of choice for stable vitiligo in children and adolescents, especially for cases resistant to other therapies.

“…[1218] Different studies have used different volume of cell suspension in addition to different media to resuspend the cells. For example, a group used phosphate buffer saline[17] while another used melanocyte media for making cell suspension. [18] The other difference is the route of transplantation.…”

“…Cellular grafting techniques have advantages over tissue grafts such as punch grafts or suction blister epidermal grafts, including greater uniformity of pigmentation, lower risk of skin-texture abnormalities such as cobblestoning, and the ability to cover larger areas of vitiligo with smaller graft sizes. Noncultured epidermal suspension transplantation in stable vitiligo was first described by Gauthier and Surleve-Bazeille [25], and a recent paper reports the use of this technique in children and adolescents [26]. However, the donor skin size to recipient skin size ratio is between 1 : 3 and 1 : 10.…”
