Noncontact detection of earthquake-induced landslides by an enhanced image binarization method incorporating with Monte-Carlo simulation

Abstract: Detecting landslides using remote sensing images involves converting gray level images into binary images. Given the complex background and non-uniform illumination in the regional remote sensing image, the commonly-used global thresholding methods are limited to interpret some landslides those hidden in the shadow. In this paper, we report on an enhanced image thresholding method for the noncontact detection of earthquake-induced landslides. The proposed method incorporates Monte-Carlo simulation into the loc… Show more

“…The OpenCV open-source image library based on Python language realizes binarization of the distribution of rock mass fractures. According to the image outline recognized by binarization (Han et al 2019), we draw the overall shedding area (green curve area) and the shape of the fissure development (blue line) (Fig. 12).…”

“…The study area is the Qingchuan County in the transitional region between the Sichuan Basin and the Western Sichuan Plateau. This area has long been recognized as one of the most landslide-prone areas of China [31]. It locates between 32 • 12 ~32 • 56 N in latitude and 104 • 36 ~105 • 38 E in longitude, covering a total area of 3217 km 2 .…”

“…Edge detection must meet two conditions: it must effectively suppress noise and locate the edge as accurately as possible. Image binarization [31,32] is one of the most commonly used image processing methods. In the binarization process, a specified threshold is set for the pixel value of the greyscale image.…”
