Noncoding RNAs in human intervertebral disc degeneration: An integrated microarray study

Abstract: Accumulating evidence indicates that noncoding RNAs play important roles in a multitude of biological processes. The striking findings of miRNAs (microRNAs) and lncRNAs (long noncoding RNAs) as members of noncoding RNAs open up an exciting era in the studies of gene regulation. More recently, the reports of circRNAs (circular RNAs) add fuel to the noncoding RNAs research. Human intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is a main cause of low back pain as a disabling spinal disease. We have addressed the expressio… Show more

“…Like miRNAs, lncRNAs are also thought to be major contributors to normal cellular physiological processes and their expression patterns are tissue‐ and cell‐specific . Although studies on lcnRNAs are still in their infancy, they have emerged as critical players in the onset and development of OA and IDD . In this review, we overview the biogenesis, classification and functions of lncRNAs, and focus on their emerging pathological implications and therapeutic potential in IDD and OA.…”

“…GSE63492 was based on an Agilent GPL19449 platform which entitled: Exiqon miRCURY LNA microRNA Array, 7th generation REV-hsa, mmu & rno (miRBase v18.0), submitted by Liu et al (21). The GSE63492 dataset contained 10 samples in total, 5 of which were samples from patients with IDD and the other 5 were tissues from individuals with normal discs.…”

“…184 Notably, expression profiling studies have identified a number of dysregulated miRNAs in human degenerated IVDs when compared to control specimens. [185][186][187][188] Another study reported higher levels of miR-100 in human lumbar degenerated discs compared to traumatized, non-degenerated human specimens and that altered expression levels correlated with FGFR1. 189 A polymorphism in pre-miR-125a (Rs12976445) has been shown to result in a significant reduction in the amount of mature miR-125a by compromising its processing, thereby leading to less efficient inhibition of target genes.…”
