The five new isostructural compounds Ag0.5Pb1.75GeS4, Ag0.5Pb1.75GeSe4, Ag0.5Eu1.75GeS4, Cu0.5Pb1.75GeS4, and Na0.5Pb1.75GeSe4 are synthesized by direct combination of stoichiometric amounts of the elements (500-850°C, 48-72 h, 75-100% yield). As revealed by single crystal XRD they crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group I43d with Z = 16. The structure is similar to that of Ba 3 CdSn 2 S 8 , and features tetrahedral [GeQ 4 ] 4building blocks. The compounds are semiconductors and may exhibit interesting nonlinear optical behavior or photoconductivity depending on the band gap. -(IYER, R. G.; AITKEN, J. A.; KANATZIDIS*, M.
