Noncaloric Sweeteners in Children: A Controversial Theme

Abstract: Noncaloric sweeteners (NCS) are food additives used to provide sweetness without adding calories. Their consumption has become more widespread around the world in all age groups, including children. The aim of this study is to show the state of the art about the intake of noncaloric sweeteners in children, as well as their benefits and consumption risk. Scientific searchers were used (PUBMED, Scopus, and Scielo) to analyze articles that included keywords (noncaloric sweeteners/saccharin/cyclamate/acesulfame po… Show more

“…As the consumption of non-alcoholic beverages is high among children and teenagers [ 2 ], we can expect that increased use of LNCS, will lead to increased intake of LNCS in these groups. This opens a new issue since children can, in some cases (e.g., diabetics), exceed ADI values of some LNCS [ 15 , 17 , 41 ]. Some studies also suggest that LNCS consumption in children could reduce sensitivity to sweet taste and consequently to poorer eating habits later in life [ 42 ].…”

“…They are therefore added in small amounts to foods and beverages in replacement of sucrose, reducing their caloric density. Accordingly, they have been increasingly used in the world for the prevention and management of obesity and type-2 diabetes (30- 32,38). For example, the recent Ibero-American consensus statement (39) recommends that "foods and beverages with NCS could be included in dietary guidelines as alternative options to products sweetened with free sugars."…”

“…Despite these concerns, the consumption of NCSs is growing at a sustained rate in much of the world including Chile. This phenomenon represents an emerging problem in children who are affected from early ages to amounts of NCSs that can exceed their Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI), without knowing the implications of such exposure at the metabolic level (28)(29)(30)(31)(32). In Chile, this problem can be considered as an undesirable "throwback" of the new Regulation.…”

“…The impact on health of increased intake of these NNS is still unclear [ 11 ]. Additional research is needed to obtain convincing evidence about its efficacy in the long-term as well as its lack of negative effects derived from chronic NNS use in high dosages [ 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”
