Non-Urinary Tract Infections Caused by Multiply Antibiotic-Resistant Corynebacterium urealyticum

Abstract: Five patients with non-urinary tract infections caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum were seen during an 8-year period at a university hospital in Madrid. Bacteremia (one case) and wound infections (four cases) were the most relevant features of these cases. Treatment with vancomycin, surgery, and supportive measures contributed to a favorable outcome for four of the five patients.

“…Although Corynebacterium urealyticum has been recorded only rarely as a cause of nonurinary infection in humans, it has been isolated from cases of pneumonia, peritonitis, cardiac valve infection, osteomyelitis, infection of postoperative wounds, and soft tissue necrosis [5]. We present here six cases of bacteremia caused by multiply resistant Corynebacterium urealyticum, four of which occurred in patients who had no evidence of pathology in the urinary tract.…”

“…Unlike some members of the genus Corynebacterium, especially Corynebacterium jeikeium, Corynebacterium urealyticum is an infrequent cause of bacteremia [4,5]. Corynebacterium jeikeium, a diphtheromorph, has arisen as a major human pathogen together with Corynebacterium urealyticum.…”

“…1), nonmotile, catalase-positive, multiresistant, urease-positive microorganism with filamentous morphology (Corynebacteria are often pleomorphic). This bacterium has been involved in endocarditis, (4) pericarditis (5), bacteriemia (6), peritonitis (7), osteomyelitis (8), necrotic infections of soft-tissue(3), and wound infections (9). Since 1985 it has been known as a cause of alkaline encrusted cystitis and other urinary tract infections (UTI) (I), occurring mainly in debilitated or transplanted patients subjected to urological manipulation (10).…”

“…
Corynebacterium urealyticum is a Gram-positive, slowgrowing, and urea-splitting bacterium that frequently colonizes the skin and may occasionally cause a transient bacteremia [1][2][3][4]. However, sepsis due to C. urealyticum is rare, with only few cases reported over the past three decades, but it remains a life-threatening condition with mortality rate up to 20% [1][2][3][4].

Very scarce information is available about infection caused by C. urealyticum acquired while in the hospital.…”
