Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections—A neglected and emerging problem

Abstract: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous dwellers of environmental niches and are an established cause of natural and nosocomial infections. The incidence of NTM infections is rising owing to a growing population of immunocompromised and vulnerable individuals, complex medical and surgical procedures, as well as increased awareness and diagnostic capabilities. The prevalence of different NTM varies between continents, regions, and countries. The true global burden of pulmonary and extrapulmonary disea… Show more

“…Specific mycobacterial cultures need to be requested to make the diagnosis but hospital physicians and general practitioners are not necessarily familiar with NTM disease. This can cause considerable delays in diagnosis:the median time from symptom onset to diagnosis has been estimated to be at least two years (Ahmed et al, 2020). Current guidelines recommend tests for NTM infection in patients with bronchiectasis (Haworth et al, 2017), but this is performed in less than a fifth of patients (Finch et al, 2019).…”

“…cystic fibrosis (Park and Olivier 2015 ), are affected. Non-tubercular mycobacteria not only cause lung tissue infections (Weiss and Glassroth 2012 ; Wassilew et al 2016 ), but also affect the skin, soft tissue and the central nervous system (Ahmed et al 2020 ). Development of new antibiotics is needed to overcome drug resistance and to provide new options for treatment (Wu et al 2018 ).…”
