Non-thermal plasmas in and in contact with liquids

Abstract: During the last two decades atmospheric (or high) pressure non-thermal plasmas in and in contact with liquids have received a lot of attention in view of their considerable environmental and medical applications. The simultaneous generation of intense UV radiation, shock waves and active radicals makes these discharges particularly suitable for decontamination, sterilization and purification purposes. This paper reviews the current status of research on atmospheric pressure non-thermal discharges in and in con… Show more

“…A set of mass flow controllers (Brooks 5800, 10 slm, 1slm) are used to control gas flow and admixture concentration to the reactor (see (1)). Helium can be humidified with the help of a water bubbler (250 ml, Duran) (2), enabling to add up to 3% water vapor to the helium flow.…”

“…These discharges can produce a great amount of reactive species, including O, OH and H 2 O 2 [1]. A better understanding of underlying mechanisms and dependencies of the production of these reactive species may benefit many different applications ranging from biomedical applications over air treatment to chemical synthesis.…”

“…Whereas CAPPs are typically generated in gas mixtures containing noble gases or in ambient air, they can also be produced in bubbles in liquids a e-mail:anton.nikiforov@Ugent.be or in the gas phase above a liquid surface. In recent years the interest in non-thermal plasmas in or in contact with liquids has increased significantly [1]. Intensive chemical reactions and energy transfer mechanisms at the plasmaliquid interface and the intensive evaporation makes the physics of these discharges complex and the diagnostics challenging.…”
