A divatipar köztudottan a világ második legszennyezőbb iparága, annak ellenére, hogy már évek óta a termelői és a fogyasztói oldalról is egyaránt vannak lépések a fenntarthatóság előmozdítása felé. Felmerülhet a kérdés, hogy akkor miért nem történik számottevő változás? A válasz a külvilág felé történő kommunikáció és a valódi cselekvés közötti diszharmóniára vezethető vissza. A szakirodalmi áttekintés alapján a divatipari szervezetek minimális erőfeszítéseket tesznek a fenntartható termelés felé, és ezek is csak a cégcsoportra tett vállalások, nem esik szó benne a beszállítókról, a ruházati termékek előállítási módjairól. Tehát inkább zöldremosás tapasztalható, amely erős kommunikációs nyomással, reklámokkal párosul. Miközben az újonnan bevezetett termékek száma továbbra is folyamatosan nő. A fogyasztó oldalán fogyasztási motivációként megjelenik a divatot mozgató kettősség: elkülönülés és a csoportba való beilleszkedés jelensége; illetve az önkoncepció (valódi énkép, ideális énkép, társadalmi énkép összefüggései, Sirgy, 1982). Campbell 1996-ban amellett érvel, hogy a fogyasztást a mentális hedonizmus mozgatja, a termékeken keresztül érhetőek el a vágyak. Tehát a vásárlás pszichológiailag vezérelt, vagyis a fogyasztás csökkentése érdekében nagyfokú egyéni tudatosságra, társadalmi együttműködésre van szükség. A kérdés továbbra is adott, mikor válik fontosabbá és tettekkel alátámasztottá a fenntarthatóság, mint a divatos egyéni megjelenés és a profit?
