Non‐surgical and supportive periodontal therapy: predictors of compliance

Abstract: Aim To identify predictors of compliance during non-surgical and supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, demographic, dental, medical data of 427 new patients in a private practice were collected. Data were analysed in statistical models with non-surgical therapy and SPT compliance used as dependent variables. Results Of the 427 patients, 17.3% never agreed to initial therapy, 10.7% never completed therapy and 20.8% completed treatment, but never entered SPT… Show more

“…One hundred sixty-five adult periodontal patients aged between 18 and 85 years visited the undergraduate practice in Greece in 2014. The profile of this cohort was females (56.7%), non-smokers (60%) with a mean age of 48.3 years and a diagnosis of severe periodontal disease (82.4%) 2 . In a study from the Emergency Clinic of Athens Dental School in Greece, data were analyzed from 553 patients who visited the dental school seeking emergency dental care 3 .…”

“…SRP therapy causes a resolution of inf lammatory response and a cessation of the progression of periodontal disease and hence results in a reduction of pocket depth and a relative gain in clinical attachment. 11 Following doxycycline alone, Group 1= scaling and root planing; Group 2= systemic doxycycline; Group 3= systemic doxycycline with scaling and root planing. Differences of the clinical parameters measurement are shown in in mean ± SD relatively no significant reduction was observed in the clinical parameters at 20 weeks.…”

“…A number of different nonsurgical and surgical therapies have been successful in achieving this goal. [11][12][13] The primary nonsurgical approach involves mechanical scaling and root planing (SRP). The beneficial effects of SRP arise from a reduction in the microbial burden in the periodontal pocket, or a shift toward less pathogenic microflora.…”

“…The results reported that compliance was often considered to be insufficient, particularly with regard to patients treated in private practice . Insufficient oral hygiene and poor attendance of the recommended recall appointments after periodontal treatment have been proven to be significantly associated with the progression/recurrence of periodontitis, root caries, and tooth loss …”
