Non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal ideation in relation to eating and general psychopathology among college-age women

Abstract: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal ideation are potent risk factors for suicide and are associated with general and eating disorder-specific psychopathology. Limited research has examined the effects of combined NSSI+suicidal ideation thus concurrent examination is needed to understand potential differential effects on psychopathology. “…Furthermore, in a study on DSH behavior among young Italian adults, individuals with a history of DSH, compared with individuals with no history of DSH, reported higher levels of dissociations and depersonalization (Cerutti et al, 2012 ). In addition, a relationship between NSSI and eating disorders often appears (Claes et al, 2001 ; Iannaccone et al, 2013 ; Eichen et al, 2016 ), although not all researchers confirm such an association (Selby et al, 2012 ). Cerutti et al ( 2012 ) found that adults with NSSI history reported negative attitudes toward the body and lower levels of body protection.…”

“…Each item on the PHQ‐9 is scored on a 4‐point Likert scale, ranging from 0 (“not at all”) to 3 (“nearly every day”). Participants were asked to rate how often they experienced the following over the past two weeks: “thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of hurting yourself in some way.” Similar to Eichen et al (), participants who selected a response >0 (“not at all”) were categorized as “endorsing SI.”…”

“…It is important to mention that one of the limitations is that this study was based, for the most part, on patients suffering from mood disorders, which enabled us to control for the psychiatric diagnosis variable. However, these results cannot be generalized to other disorders associated with suicidal behavior, such as psychotic disorders or eating disorders, substance dependency disorders, or cognitive disorders ( 1 , 62 ). The fact that a small number of the patients who were invited to participate in this research declined to do so, even though they met the inclusion criteria, is also considered a limitation.…”
