Non-stereotactic method involving combination of ultrasound-guided wire localization and vacuum-assisted breast biopsy for microcalcification

Abstract: "Microcalcification-only" breast lesions can be easily evaluated with the combination of non-stereotactic US-guided wire localization and VABB. This would be an effective diagnostic technique for breast lesion which reveals only microcalcification.

“…These lesions should first be definitively diagnosed by using image-guided needle biopsy. For these lesions stereotactic method has been used for decades 20 . After needle localization, two mammographic views are taken in order to provide a road-map to the surgeon for the specimen removal.…”

“…Preoperative placement of a hook wire into nonpalpable lesions under imaging guidance is, in privileged counties, commonly performed for patients with suspected findings on mammograms and/or ultrasound for breast cancer. 19,20 This is a highly technical and technology dependent procedure. In a country with limited resources and facilities we attempted to conserve breast as well as provide adequate treatment to our patients with early detected tumours.…”

“…Various methods have been developed to be able to perform biopsies of microcalcifications under US guidance. One of these is the method described by Lee et al of vacuum biopsy performed after placement of a wire under US guidance [16]. However, the expensive vacuum needle biopsy is again used in this method, and another interventional procedure is performed for placement and removal of the wire.…”
