Web Geographic Information Systems (WebGISs) were widely used to monitor COVID-19 cases and deaths during the pandemic. Furthermore, geotechnologies were also very useful in education, public management, tourism, and other areas. Although there are WebGISs with a high level of sophistication, most are simple, consisting of geovisualizers of cases, deaths, and vaccinations. This study develops a WebGIS that offers information about age, comorbidities, and tests, which can be analyzed from specific points such as hospitals, main access roads, regions, or neighborhoods. Although it is not a highly sophisticated solution, the WebGIS developed in this study is especially useful for municipal governments in developing countries like Brazil that do not have patient health data in geographic databases. The WebGIS developed in this study offers public managers essential information for developing effective public policies to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and other epidemiological phenomena such as dengue and malaria.

Esta pesquisa resulta de uma análise abrangente da literatura recente sobre a pandemia de COVID-19 e suas interações com aspectos espaciais. São objetivos deste artigo i) demonstrar os primeiros resultados da pesquisa de sistematização de bibliografias que constituem interlocuções entre a Geografia e as áreas da Saúde, tendo como foco investigações acerca da pandemia de COVID-19 em diferentes escalas geográficas; ii) destacar os principais periódicos e origens dos artigos que apresentam tal interlocução; iii) evidenciar eixos temáticos estruturantes do debate sobre a dispersão do patógeno em questão; e iv) apontar lacunas de pesquisa que sejam úteis à formulação de pesquisas futuras. Para tanto, realizou-se uma revisão sistemática da literatura baseada na seleção de 28 palavras-chave comumente presentes em estudos geográficos, às quais somaram-se termos relativos à COVID-19. O Portal de Periódicos da CAPES foi a principal fonte de pesquisa, tendo sido identificadas 8.319 publicações revisadas por pares entre janeiro de 2020 até o presente momento. Com as filtragens baseadas em critérios de relevância, e concordância com a pergunta inicial da pesquisa “o que sabemos sobre a dimensão espacial da COVID-19?”, reduziu-se a 173 o montante de artigos analisados. Os resultados evidenciam expressivo número de produções associado ao Norte Global, embora no Sul Global pesquisadores brasileiros se destaquem nos estudos que associam a abordagem espacial à pandemia de COVID-19. Também concluímos que há um consenso entre pesquisadores do mundo, devido ao significativo volume de produções que aspectos como a identificação de cluster e padrões espaciais; a mobilidade; o comportamento humano; o meio ambiente; o ambiente construído; a dimensão social e a integração entre dimensão social e ambiental; são extremamente relevantes para a compreensão e análise sobre a pandemia de COVID-19.

The outbreak of COVID-19 is a public health emergency that caused disastrous results in many countries. The global aim is to stop transmission and prevent the spread of the disease. To achieve it, every country needs to scale up emergency response mechanisms, educate and actively communicate with the public, intensify infected case finding, contact tracing, monitoring, quarantine of contacts, and isolation of cases. Responding to an emergency requires efficient collaboration and a multi-skilled approach (medical, information, statistical, political, social, and other expertise), which makes it hard to define one interface for all. As actors from different perspectives and domain backgrounds need to address diverse functions, the possibility to exchange available information quickly would be desirable. Geoportal provides an entry point to access a variety of data (geospatial data, epidemiological data) and could be used for data discovery, view, download, and transformation. It helps to deal with challenges like data analysis, confirmed cases geocoding, recognition of disease dynamics, vulnerable groups identification, and capacity mapping. Predicting and modeling the spread of infection, along with application support for communication and collaboration, are the biggest challenges. In response to all these challenges, we have established the Epidemic Location Intelligence System (ELIS) using open-source software components in the cloud, as a working platform with all the required functionalities.
