Non-Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Sinonasal Tract and Nasopharynx. Report of 2 Cases and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Non-small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (NSNECs) of the sinonasal tract are rare. Due to their rarity, the clinical and pathologic characteristics of these neoplasms are not adequately understood. We report two additional examples of NSNEC. The patients were male, 67-and 34-year-old. The first had a tumor involving left ethmoid sinus and nasal cavity and the second, a neoplasm involving nasopharynx, sphenoid sinus, with bilateral involvement of cavernous sinuses. Both tumors were composed of small to medium s… Show more

“…It is difficult to make conclusive statements regarding the clinical behavior of NEC grade 1 given their rarity and paucity of good prognostic data. Age at presentation has ranged from 23 to 71 years [7,23,26] with most patients being alive with no recurrent disease after follow-up periods ranging from 18 to 124 months [7,22,23,27].…”

“…In almost all the cases reported in the English literature, the treatment consisted of surgery (7,(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25). In certain studies, conventional radiotherapy was used alone or in combination with either surgery or chemotherapy, but the efficacy of such regimens is yet to be proven (22).…”

“…As stated above, in our case, the degree of nuclear atypia and the presence of rather brisk mitotic activity would not be compatible with a benign neoplasm, but a carcinoma and exceeds that of both ADCCA and PLGA. Also rare, but well documented cases of primary nasopharyngeal neuroendocrine tumors and carcinomas (both small and nonsmall cell types) and NUT translocated carcinomas are on record [13][14][15][16][17][18]. BSCC may be associated with EBV [19] and frequently harbors small foci of alcian blue-positive mucosubstances in the stroma.…”
