Abstract: Chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) lesions retain increased densities of microglia and macrophages. In acute SCI, macrophages induce growth cone collapse, facilitate axon retraction away from lesion boundaries, as well as play a key role in orchestrating the growth-inhibitory glial scar.
