Non-rapid eye movement sleep determines resilience to social stress

Abstract: Resilience, the ability to overcome stressful conditions, is found in most mammals and varies significantly among individuals. A lack of resilience can lead to the development of neuropsychiatric and sleep disorders, often within the same individual. Despite extensive research into the brain mechanisms causing maladaptive behavioral-responses to stress, it is not clear why some individuals exhibit resilience. To examine if sleep has a determinative role in maladaptive behavioral-response to social stress, we i… Show more

“…Measures beyond gross sleep-wake state measures may reveal more nuanced and biologically relevant changes in the sleep researcher’s experiments. As we show using the Bush and colleague’s dataset, [12,13] their pharmacogenetic treatment increased NREMS bouts, but not duration. These differences can mark important differences between various psychiatric and neurological diseases.…”

“…NREMs are linked to the brain’s function in clearing Aβ. Conversely, stress causes fragmentation of NREMs, disrupts sleep continuity and can lead to cognitive impairment and anxiety ( Benkirane et al, 2022 ; Bush et al, 2022 ). In our study, increased NREM duration after SDS may be a key factor in relieving anxiety.…”

“…Implantation was performed with the animals under pentobarbital anesthesia (50 mg/kg, i.p.). C57BL/6N mice were also chosen for recording and data analysis through EEG surgery, following established procedures and methods in previous reports [29,30]. To enable electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements, the head mount was precisely placed with its front edge 3.0 mm anterior to the bregma.…”
