Non-parametric analysis of production efficiency of poultry egg farmers in Delta State, Nigeria

Abstract: The study examined the non-parametric analysis of production efficiency of poultry eggs farmers in the Delta State Nigeria. Data used for the study were obtained using structured questionnaires administered to 120 randomly selected poultry farmers in four Local Government Areas of the State. Data envelopment analysis and Cobb-Douglas production function wwere used to analyze the data. The result showed that 30% of the poultry farmers in the study area were operating at frontier and optimum level of production … Show more

“…The output level still remains low compared to the input committed in production and the poultry products are grossly inadequate because the supply is lower than demand. A short fall in egg production in Nigeria has been as a result of grossly high demand for poultry egg and a dwindling supply of the product (Ojo, Jirgi and Ajayi, 2012).…”

“…The production function articulates the relationship connecting variable inputs and a fixed input at the minimum threshold required to generate optimal Output. Ojo et al (2013) characterises this relationship as a quantifiable representation highlighting the interconnectedness between inputs and outputs within the production process. The assessment of total factor productivity frequently engages either of two prominent methodological pathways: the parametric and non-parametric approaches.…”

“…The business of poultry farming comprises chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail and guinea fowls. Chickens constitute about 70% of the poultry population in Nigeria therefore the term 'poultry farming' is used generally to refer to chicken farming in Nigeria (Ojo, Ojo, Jirgi and Ajayi, 2012). The major poultry products are eggs and meat.…”
