Non-linear dynamic response of a cable system with a tuned mass damper to stochastic base excitation via equivalent linearization technique

Abstract: Non-linear dynamic model of a cable–mass system with a transverse tuned mass damper is considered. The system is moving in a vertical host structure therefore the cable length varies slowly over time. Under the time-dependent external loads the sway of host structure with low frequencies and high amplitudes can be observed. That yields the base excitation which in turn results in the excitation of a cable system. The original model is governed by a system of non-linear partial differential equations with corre… Show more

“…Mathematical modeling and control of cables (for several applications) and space tethers can be found in literature, and it is very hard to find two authors that use the same mathematical model (or similar) and the same control design (Chung, 2007; Kuo, 2016; Trushlyakov and Yudintsev, 2020; Weber et al, 2020). Of course, in many cases, the purpose of the investigation or the mission in interest will affect the mathematical models and control strategies used.…”

“…The particular coefficients of an equivalent linear system expressed in terms of expectations of non-linear functions of random state variables are obtained from the condition of mean-square minimization of the error between both systems. An implementation of equivalent linearization technique to obtain the response of a simplified model of lift installation under stochastic wind load can be found in [16].…”

“…Weber et al [5] investigated a nonlinear slowly moving vertical cable within a tall host structure under time dependent external loading, which may result in low frequencies and high amplitudes oscillations. The governing PDEs have been reduced to a set of or ordinary differential equations considering quadratic couplings between the longitudinal and transversal modes and cubic couplings between transverse modes.…”
