Non-Keratinizing Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma with Adenomatous Differentiation

Abstract: A case of non-keratinizing, EBV-positive (EBER-in situ hybridization), carcinoma with adenomatous differentiation is presented. The patient is a 40 year old male with T2N2M0 disease who received standard combined chemo-and radiotherapy with complete resolution of all tumor. The tumor cells were strongly positive for low-molecular weight cytokeratins (AE1-3) and scattered cells expressed cytokeratin 20. No expression of cytokeratin 5/6, 7, p63, TTF-1, CDX2 or androgen receptor was detected. There was no evidenc… Show more

“…10 In rare conditions, NPC with adenomatous differentiation and salivary gland features also occur in the nasopharynx. 3,4 Kuo et al reported a series of salivary gland type NPCs in which mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) was the most common pathology. 4 In addition, Kusafuka et al…”

“…Only a small number of studies have reported rare variants of NPC, with spindle cell, pleomorphic, and papillary types being relatively well‐known variants 2 . More recent studies have reported rare variants with reticular and myxoid patterns 3 and prominent stromal desmoplasia 10 . In rare conditions, NPC with adenomatous differentiation and salivary gland features also occur in the nasopharynx 3,4 .…”

“…Very rarely, NPC may display a cord-like, reticular arrangement of tumor cells associated with significant myxoid substances in the stroma [2]. Another very uncommon histological pattern in NPC is adenomatous/glandular differentiation [3]. This report presents a patient with a nonkeratinizing NPC which predominantly was composed of neoplastic spindle cells which were organized into whorls, frequently around small caliber blood vessels.…”
