Non-isothermal sinter-crystallization of jagged Li2O–Al2O3–SiO2 glass and simulation using a modified form of the Clusters model

Abstract: We have tested a modified form of the Clusters model of sintering for the complex case of non-isothermal sintering with concurrent crystallization of a multicomponent lithium aluminum silicate (LAS) glass having a broad size distribution of jagged particles. We compared experimental and simulated densification data using a constant heating rate. Only one adjustable parameter was used: the particle shape factor (K s ). We discuss the results in light of some complicating factors, such as temperature gradients w… Show more

“…We find that for the glass beads, which have a dominant peak that is near‐Gaussian, the value of c can be taken as ~1. This is in agreement with previous studies that have used this parameter with tightly clustered particle size distributions [ Lara et al ., ; Prado et al ., ; Soares et al ., ].…”

“…Additionally, we use the method of Soares et al . [] to convert the continuous measurements of height and diameter (Figures a and b) into relative densities (Figures c and d). The measurements of sample geometry are automated, and thus, the thermal expansion of the alumina substrate (~99.5 wt % Al 2 O 3 ) is considered when deriving absolute changes in sample height.…”

“…In order to meet the requirements mentioned above, we concentrated on the glass-ceramics system, because of unstable properties of the glass/ceramics system. As we know, Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (LAS) glass-ceramics possess low or even negative CTE, high chemical durability, and excellent thermal shock resistance properties [9]. The feasibility of LAS glass-ceramics as a substrate material for the LTCC application has been confirmed in previous researches.…”

“…La sinterización de vidrios del sistema LAS se ha abordado en estudios anteriores, obteniéndose vitrocerámicos con CET= 2x10 -8 C -1 y densidades relativas del 98 % [9]. Este tipo de materiales son muy adecuados para aplicaciones en placas vitrocerámicas de inducción.…”
