Non-invertible symmetries, brane dynamics, and tachyon condensation

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have nontrivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined when such lines are pulled into the bulk. Second, the Symmetry TFT appears to be too trivial to allow for topological boundary conditions encoding all the different global variants. We show that both of these puzzles can be solved by including endable (tubular) surfaces in the class of bulk topological operators one has to consider. In this way, we are able to reproduce all global variants of the theory, with their symmetries and their anomalies. We check the validity of our proposal also against a top-down holographic realization of the same class of theories.

Anomalies of 4d SpinG theories

We consider ’t Hooft anomalies of four-dimensional gauge theories whose fermion matter content admits SpinG(4) generalized spin structure, with G either gauged or a global symmetry. We discuss methods to directly compute w2 ∪ w3 ’t Hooft anomalies involving Stiefel-Whitney classes of gauge and flavor symmetry bundles that such theories can have on non-spin manifolds, e.g. M4 = ℂℙ2. Such anomalies have been discussed for SU(2) gauge theory with adjoint fermions, where they were shown to give an effect that was originally found in the Donaldson-Witten topological twist of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 SYM theory. We directly compute these anomalies for a variety of theories, including general G gauge theories with adjoint fermions, SU(2) gauge theory with fermions in general representations, and Spin(N) gauge theories with fundamental matter. We discuss aspects of matching these and other ’t Hooft anomalies in the IR phase where global symmetries are spontaneously broken, in particular for general Ggauge theory with Nf adjoint Weyl fermions. For example, in the case of Nf = 2 we discuss anomaly matching in the IR phase consisting of $$ {h}_{G_{\textrm{gauge}}}^{\vee } $$ h G gauge ∨ copies of a ℂℙ1 non-linear sigma model, including for the w2w3 anomalies when formulated with $$ {\textrm{Spin}}_{\textrm{SU}{(2)}_{\textrm{global}}}(4) $$ Spin SU 2 global 4 structure.

Remarks on geometric engineering, symmetry TFTs and anomalies

Geometric engineering is a collection of tools developed to establish dictionaries between local singularities in string theory and (supersymmetric) quantum fields. Extended operators and defects, as well as their higher quantum numbers captured by topological symmetries, can be encoded within geometric engineering dictionaries. In this paper we revisit and clarify aspects of these techniques, with special emphasis on ’t Hooft anomalies, interpreted from the SymTFT perspective as obstructions to the existence of Neumann boundary conditions. These obstructions to gauging higher symmetries are captured via higher link correlators for the SymTFT on spheres. In this work, we give the geometric engineering counterpart of this construction in terms of higher links of topological membranes. We provide a consistency check in the context of 5D SCFTs with anomalous 1-form symmetries, where we give two independent derivations of the anomaly in terms of higher links, one purely field theoretical and the other purely geometrical. Along the way, we also recover the construction of non-invertible duality defects in 4D $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM from a geometric engineering perspective.
