“…Furthermore, in late-stage RDD lesions, fibrosis becomes more prevalent, making the identification of residual RDD islands challenging [ 29 ]. While emperipolesis is a crucial indicator suggesting RDD disease, it is not entirely specific, as scattered emperipolesis can be observed in other histiocytic disorders such as Erdheim-Chester disease, yellow granuloma and malignant histiocytosis [ 30 32 ]. Meanwhile, immunohistochemistry plays a pivotal role in further delineating RDD disease.…”

“…Their biological mechanisms and pathogenic roles are starting to emerge. Some findings suggested that lymphocytes may use the alternative cell‐in‐cell phenomenon to kill target tumour cells . Alternatively, tumour cells may destroy invading lymphocytes as a mechanism to escape immune surveillance .…”

“…Some findings suggested that lymphocytes may use the alternative cell-in-cell phenomenon to kill target tumour cells. 15,16 Alternatively, tumour cells may destroy invading lymphocytes as a mechanism to escape immune surveillance. 17 The consequences of emperipolesis were also debatable.…”

“…For cytological specimen evaluation, the focus is on detection of atypical cells, and background cell characteristics, such as components of inflammatory cells, are rarely considered (14), for example in special tumor cell types with lymphocyte infiltration such as Warthin tumor of the salivary glands (15) and seminoma of the testis/dysgerminoma of the ovary (16). Numerous studies describing emperipolesis and cell cannibalism are either about experiments that utilized cytological specimens or case reports (5,8,(17)(18)(19)(20). However, in light of recent advancements in other techniques, including immunocytochemistry, in-situ hybridization and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (21), cytological evaluations should consider other characteristics, focusing on less frequently observed findings such as CiCP, in addition to routinely observed characteristics, including cellular atypia (22).…”
