Non-functioning pituitary adenoma underwent surgery: A multicenter retrospective study over the last four decades (1977–2015)

Abstract: NFPAs surgically treated in Spain are usually macroadenomas diagnosed around the sixth decade of life with no sex predilection. Type of surgery is associated with clinical outcome. Endoscopic endonasal surgery behaves as a positive predictor for the absence of tumor imaging and complete cure in the follow up.

“…7,13,19,29,30 Reports of progression rates after STR are much more variable due to heterogeneity of inclusion criteria, tumor characteristics, definitions of progression, and duration of follow-up. 15 In a series of 80 patients, Dallapiazza et al 3 reported a progression rate of 52% with a mean follow-up of 72 months. On the other hand, Seltzer et al 37 reported a progression rate of 8.3% in a group of 24 patients with a mean follow-up of 61 months.…”

“…Remission rates of 76%-90% are expected in people, and, if there is no recurrence within 5 years, they are considered cured. [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] TS in dogs is currently performed successfully in the Netherlands, Japan, and the United States. [15][16][17][18] TS has been positively embraced in the Netherlands since 1997, with good long-term remission rates and low morbidity and mortality.…”

“…PA can be functioning and non-functioning and its frequency depends on different factors, such as age at diagnosis and sex [5]. In young patients (second or third decade of life) and, mainly in women, the most frequent pituitary tumor is lactotrope adenoma (prolactinoma), usually less than 1 cm (microprolactinoma), whereas non-functioning PA (NFPA), usually ≥ 1 cm (macroadenoma), is more common in adults (around six decade of life), without sex predilection [6].…”
