Non-Fermi-liquid behavior inCaCu3Ru4O12

Abstract: We present bulk magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, transport, NMR, and NQR results of the perovskite compound CaCu 3 Ru 4 O 12 . The data consistently describe a metallic state with a moderately enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of ␥ =92 mJ/ mol K 2 and a spin-fluctuation temperature of about 180 K. The heat capacity below 2 K shows a logarithmic increase providing evidence for non-Fermi-liquid ͑NFL͒ behavior in CaCu 3 Ru 4 O 12 . Further signatures of NFL properties are found in NQR measurements revealing … Show more

“…The on-resonance spectrum bears strong similarity to the one of CuO. 32 Huge resonance features are observed, each corresponding to different Cu 3d 8 photon energy difference for resonant and non-resonant measurements (10 eV), the photoionization cross-sections for Cu 3d, Ru 4d, and O 2p are practically constant. The changes in the spectrum can therefore be attributed primarily to the Cu resonance process.…”

“…The simulation reproduces the experiment very well. The most important parameters determining the calculated lineshape are the following: (1) the Slater integrals, which give the energy positions of the atomic-like 3d 8 multiplet final states, and (2) the difference of U dd and the charge-transfer energy ∆, controlling the energies of the final states with ligand-hole character (3d 9 L and 3d 10 L 2 ) relative to those of the 3d 8 .…”

“…The ruthenate CaCu 3 Ru 4 O 12 is a Pauli paramagnet with itinerant charge carriers showing heavy-fermion behavior [7]. For this compound, non-Fermiliquid [8] and intermediate-valence behavior [9] were reported. Strong correlation effects were also observed for the rare-earthsubstituted LnCu 3 Ru 4 O 12 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) [10,11].…”

“…22 A possibility of the non-Fermi-liquid behavior is discussed below 1 K, and is compared with other heavy fermion compounds. 23,24 The concept of the delocalization of the Cu 2+ hole has also been examined in the related compounds, such as L 2/3 Cu 3 (Ti,Ru) 4 28,29 We emphasize that response to high magnetic fields is particularly important in the present system. 30 In the antiferromagnetic phase of x = 0, the exchange energy is evaluated to be 4 meV, 8 which is much smaller than that of La 2−x Sr x CuO 4 (100 meV).…”
