Non-fentanyl-derived synthetic opioids emerging during recent years

Abstract: Purpose Since the appearance of fentanyl followed by its many kinds of analogues around 1988, North America has been exposed to fierce synthetic opioid pandemic resulting in more than 130,000 deaths due to their overdoses until May 2019, when China declared to prohibit the licit fentanyl analog production. However, the Chinese announcement did not go into force in USA due to the adroit strategies of tough traffickers. Thus, contrary to the expectation, the number of synthetic opioid products and t… Show more

“…In recent years, a new class of nonfentanyl novel synthetic opioid (NSO) known as the 2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids, or nitazenes, has surfaced on recreational drug markets worldwide. Although first reported in the late 50s and early 60s, nitazenes were never approved for clinical use . Isotonitazene, a nitazene analog that emerged in 2019, was found to be 500 times more potent than morphine and was classified as Schedule I by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the following year due to its high risk of intoxication and fatal overdose. , Despite the DEA’s action, nitazenes remain widely available on recreational drug markets and have been detected in illicit heroin and adulterated pain medicines, exacerbating the opioid crisis. ,,, …”
