Non-equilibrium constricted dc glow discharge in N2 flow at atmospheric pressure: stable and unstable regimes

Abstract: The experimental results from the study of a constricted glow discharge in turbulent flow of nitrogen at atmospheric pressure are presented. The discharge was induced by a dc high voltage superimposed between pin-to-plane electrodes inserted inside a glass tube of 1 cm diameter. At a low current I < 20 mA it is established that the properties of the constricted glow discharge in gas flow are strongly different from those in gas at rest: the discharge in gas flow exhibits four different current regimes inste… Show more

“…The use of N 2 or air plasma in glow like mode has been discussed by many groups, e.g., Akishev et al [15][16][17] where the role of different discharge parameters on the plasma stability has been checked and analyzed. In the present study, a stable atmospheric pressure DC discharge has been obtained by using a high gas flow and a high ballast of the DC power supply.…”

“…It results in strong diminishing of both electron temperature and electron density in plasma cloud that leads practically to the absence of the excitation of molecular and atomic electron states by electron impact. That is why there is no emission of 1 + and 2 + N 2 systems from plasma clouds (note that just the same situation was observed in steady-state plasma jet in N 2 [12]). Nevertheless, there is strong emission from the clouds in the Fe I lines.…”
