Non-endoscopic biopsy techniques: a review

Abstract: Diseases of the stomach and small intestine account for approximately 20% of all gastrointestinal (GI)-related mortality. Biopsy of the stomach and small intestine remains a key diagnostic tool for most of the major diseases that affect the GI tract. While endoscopic means for obtaining biopsy is generally the standard of care, it has several limitations that make it less ideal for pediatric patients and in low resource areas of the world. Therefore, non-endoscopic means for obtaining biopsy samples is of inte… Show more

“…Altogether, those results show high accuracy of the transcriptomic data to differentiate celiac from non-celiac control biopsies. Such transcriptomics-based methodology can be applied on suboptimally oriented biopsies to increase accuracy of celiac diagnosis, and if future non-endoscopic sampling devices to obtain duodenal mucosal cells 25 will be introduced clinically.…”

“…Finally, we show high accuracy of the transcriptomic data to differentiate celiac from non-celiac control biopsies. If future attempts for non-endoscopic sampling device 25 to obtain duodenal mucosal cells will be successful, such transcriptomic approach can aid in accurate diagnosis of celiac subjects, in conjunction with celiac serology.…”

“…Several other electromagnetic-based sensing modules can also potentially be integrated into WCE [21]- [24]. For the tissue level diagnostics, several biopsy mechanisms for WCE have been also introduced [25]- [28] and therapeutic ones have drawn significant attention from researchers developing targeted drug delivery [29]- [32].…”

“…Recently, several biopsy solutions for capsule endoscope have been reported to address the remaining challenges, including the size, energy consumption, and performance [28]. First, in 2005 a rotational biopsy module by Kong et al was reported.…”

“…The approaches described above are patently different from those instances in which live study subjects have preconsented to a single-or multiple-tissue biopsy procedure in support of drug-metabolizing enzyme and transporter profiling (Lefor and Flowers, 1994;Padoin et al, 2006;Otuya et al, 2018). Alternatively, some investigators have profiled frozen (banked) tissue biopsy samples (Supplemental Fig.…”
