Non-destructive measurement of chloride ions concentration in concrete – A comparative analysis of limitations and prospects

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t s Measuring chloride is crucial for service life assessment of concrete structures. Measurement techniques mainly based on electrochemistry and electromagnetics. Based on the level of assessment different techniques have pro and cons. For existing structure assessment varies from visual to detailed lab investigation. Electrochemical sensor are suitable for installation in new structures.

“…The detection and monitoring of chloride ion (Cl − ) concentration plays an important role in several aspects, including human health [130][131][132], industrial process control [133], wasted water management [134], drinking water quality control [135,136], and corrosion forecasting of RCS [137][138][139]. There are several available methods for measuring Cl − concentration, including electrochemical sensors, OFS [28,140], and Bragg's grating [141,142].…”

“…Cl − is one of the most important indicators for the deterioration of RCS [140,[143][144][145][146]. In the presence of a critical amount of Cl − , also known as critical chloride content, reinforcement steel suffers quick localized corrosion, forming pits -pitting corrosion.…”

“…And they com-pared the failure mode, bond-slip curve, and bond strength, a combined strength model that considers the combined effect of corrosion ratio, fiber fraction, and c/d ratio was proposed. Abbas et al [6] have utilized ultrasonic waves to detect the concentration of chlorideions in cement slurries with supplementary cementitious materials. One should note that an exponential relationship exists between the energy/amplitude weighted average frequency and chemically combined chloride content in the cement slurry.…”

“…Refs [ 21 , 22 ] reviewed tens of non-destructive measurement techniques of Cl − content in concrete such as potentiometric measurement, electrical resistivity, impedance analysis, fiber optic sensor, laser breakdown spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and X-ray diffraction analysis. However, most of them were limited to be used in the laboratory and unable to provide accurate information about the free Cl − (Cl f ) content in pore solution of concrete.…”
