Non-contact bolt axial force measurement based on the deformation of bolt head using quartz crystal resonator and coils

Abstract: As a health monitoring tool of bolts in infrastructures, we propose a non-contact evaluation method for the axial force of a bolt. Deformation of the bolt head is measured as an electrical capacitance variation detected as a frequency shift of a simple circuit composed of a quartz crystal resonator and coils. The measurement was carried out via magnetic field coupling between the coil installed on the bolt head and another coil connected to the measurement instrument. Since the method requires no active electr… Show more

“…[14][15][16][17][18] The focus has generally been on the echoes obtained from the swim bladders of fish, because 90% of the echoes from fish when using low frequency ultrasound come from the swim bladder. 19) Megahertz-band ultrasound has been used for high-resolution measurements in other areas of research, such as nondestructive evaluation [20][21][22] and biomedical ultrasound applications. [23][24][25][26][27] To precisely observe fish behavior, high-resolution acoustic cameras with acoustic lenses using megahertz-band ultrasound such as DIDSON have been used.…”

“…Force corresponds to voltage and vibration velocity corresponds to current. [39][40][41][42] In this way, the spring, the mass and the damper correspond to capacitance as equivalent stiffness, inductance as equivalent mass and resistance as equivalent mechanical resistance, respectively. The equivalent circuit is shown in Fig.…”

“…Ultrasonic vibration is widely used for non-contact and nondestructive inspection and measurement [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] and for applications including ultrasonic welding and ultrasonic processing. [10][11][12] Ultrasonic welding does not require the application of external heat to the objects for welding; thus, this method is suitable for welding dissimilar metals that cannot be welded by hot welding methods due to their different melting points.…”
