Non-coding RNA regulatory networks

Abstract: It is well established that the vast majority of human RNA transcripts do not encode for proteins and that non-coding RNAs regulate cell physiology and shape cellular functions. A subset of them are involved in gene regulation at different levels, from epigenetic gene silencing to post-transcriptional regulation of mRNA stability. Notably, the aberrant expression of many non-coding RNAs has been associated with aggressive pathologies. Rapid advances in network biology indicates that the robustness of cellular … Show more

“…Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) refer to RNAs that are not translated into protein, including transfer RNA (tRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), small nuclear RNA (snRNA), piwi interacting RNA (piRNA), micro RNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), and circular RNA (circRNA) (Panni et al, 2019 ; Smolle et al, 2019 ; Zhang W. et al, 2019 ). ncRNAs were once regarded as transcriptional “garbage.” But recent studies suggested that ncRNAs play an important role in viral infection and host antiviral immunity (Chen et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Additionally, other non-coding RNAs appear to act as epigenetic regulators. For instance, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), or long non-coding (lncRNAs) have a pivotal role in the epigenetic landscape (reviewed elsewhere [ 100 , 101 , 102 ]). However, the direct relationship between these non-coding RNAs and nutrition still remains unknown.…”

“…More importantly, many ERVs can encode for lncRNA. The functions of these lncRNAs can be involved in various processes like recruiting transcription factors, cooperating with epigenetic regulators or modifiers, or interacting with miRNAs [31][32][33].…”
