Non-Chemical Weed Control for Plant Health and Environment: Ecological Integrated Weed Management (EIWM)

Abstract: Herbicide application has long been considered the most efficient weed control method in agricultural production worldwide. However, long-term use of agrochemicals has numerous negative effects on crops and the environment. Bearing in mind these negative impacts, the EU strategy for withdrawing many herbicides from use, and modern market demands for the production of healthy and safe food, there is a need for developing new effective, sustainable, and ecological weed control measures. To bring a fresh perspect… Show more

“…Among weed control methods, herbicide application is the most effective. Therefore, agricultural weed control relies heavily on herbicides [6]. However, the overuse of synthetic agrochemicals for weed control has increased environmental pollution, unsafe agricultural products, and human health concerns [7], and resulted in the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds [8].…”

“…Several of their weaknesses have already been mentioned above. However, the literature also suggests that although each of these alternatives may be insufficient individually, their combination could control weeds sustainably and reliably (Pavlović et al, 2022 ). Consequently, integrated weed management (IWM) consist perhaps the best candidate among the available weed management strategies.…”

“…The development of modern agriculture proposes more environmentally friendly and more durable weed management programs to reduce environmental pollution and reduce crop yield problems [10][11][12] . In recent years, with the increasing attention to health, environment and weed resistance [13][14] , the harmless thermal weeding technology based on physical methods has received attention, such as flame weeding, hot water weeding, steam weeding, solar radiation weeding, high voltage weeding and other technologies [15][16][17][18] . Hot weeding is not burning weeds but by rapidly heating the water in plant tissues.…”
