Non-biochemical Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease in General Clinic-based Rural Population of Bangladesh

Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is rapidly emerging as an important cause of mortality and morbidity in developing countries. 1Epidemiologic studies done in various populations have identified major risk factors for CVD, which include both biochemical and non-biochemical factors such as inappropriate diet and physical activity leading to high body mass index (BMI), raised blood pressure, tobacco use, unfavorable blood lipid, and impaired glucose tolerance. One report suggested that more than 75 % of CVD in popula… Show more

“…1 It is an established risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Diabetic nephropathy is one of the complications of diabetes mellitus, which ultimately leads to renal failure and renal failure is a cause of electrolyte imbalance among hospitalized diabetic patients; other causes are diarrhea, vomiting, diuretic use and chronic laxative use.…”

“…Its sample size for biochemical variables, however, was small. In other studies we described non-biochemical risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in a clinic-based [5] and general population [6] of Bangladesh. The current distribution of plasma lipids in the rural population of Bangladesh is not known.…”
