HfB 2-based ceramics, with their high melting points exceeding 2700°C, excellent strength, high thermal conductivity, and low thermal expansion coefficient, have been regarded as promising ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) for hypersonic cruise aircraft, thermal heat protection, or reentry vehicles. 1-5 Nevertheless, covalent bonding within the ceramics hinders the generation of plastic mechanisms and ductile behavior seen in metals. The resulting brittleness, which leads to catastrophic failure, 6 limits the application range of these materials. Therefore, the development of ceramics with high damage tolerance is urgently required. SiC whiskers (SiC w) or SiC fibers (SiC f) are commonly used additives for UHTCs due to their large aspect ratios and their ability in antioxidative ablation performance, grain growth restrictions, and sinterability improvement in UHTCs. 7 In addition, the toughness of monolithic UHTCs

Coal gangue is used to prepare flake nano-mullite with a molten salt method. In order to increase the utilization value, corundum composite ceramics were prepared from the nanomullite and alumina. The effect of particle size of the raw material size and the content of mullite on mechanical properties of the corundum composite ceramics was studied. It is found that the mullite with appropriate sizes can be filled in between the corundum grains, thus increasing the density of the samples. The mechanical properties were enhanced due to the variation in the crack propagation mode. The optimized sample exhibited flexural strength and fracture toughness of 263.7 MPa and 5.0 MPa•m 1/2 , respectively. Griffith fracture theory analysis results indicated that the critical crack size reached 173.9 μm and the fracture energy was 127.6 J/m 2. Coal gangue has realized deep resource utilization, and the mechanical properties of composite ceramics are higher than alumina ceramics prepared under the same conditions. Flake nanomullite contributes to mechanical properties.

Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) have emerged as promising materials for high-temperature aerospace applications due to their high melting temperature and superior ablation performance. Even still, they have yet to reach their full potential due to the catastrophic brittle failure that typically accompanies the intrinsic low fracture toughness of ceramic materials. Therefore, the emerging field of UHTC ceramic matrix composites (UHTCMCs) offers the toughness benefits of a composite with the high temperature stability of UHTCs. Here, we outline work in the last decade on the processing of UHTCs with a reinforcing fiber phase for enhanced fracture toughness. Included are fibers of both carbon and silicon carbide composition in both continuous and chopped fiber lengths. Particular emphasis is given to emerging research from the last few years to highlight novel developments.
