Non-Absolute Integrals: A Survey

Streszczenie. Stefan Kempisty był polskim matematykiem zajmującym się funkcjami zmiennej rzeczywistej, teorią mnogości, całkami, funkcjami przedziału i teorią pola powierzchni. W 1919 roku obronił pracę doktorską O funkcjach nawpółciągłych na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim w Krakowie, a jego promotorem był Kazimierz Żorawski. W grudniu 1924 roku habilitował się na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim. W latach 1920-1939 pracował na Uniwersytecie Stefana Batorego w Wilnie. Opublikował ponad czterdzieści prac naukowych i trzy podręczniki z analizy rzeczywistej oraz jedną monografię. Reprezentował w swoich pracach i na seminariach szkołę warszawską. Nazwisko Kempistego w matematyce pojawia się w związku z definicją funkcji quasi-ciągłej, różnymi ciągłościami funkcji wielu zmiennych, klasyfikacją funkcji Baire'a, Younga i Sierpińskiego, funkcjami przedziału oraz całkami Denjoy i Burkilla. Zainteresowaliśmy się Kempistym ze względu na jego dorobek naukowy, pewne niewyjaśnione informacje osobiste oraz 125 rocznicę urodzin przypadającą w 2017 roku. Przedstawiamy więc jego biografię, udział w konferencjach, sylwetki żony Eugenii i córki Marii oraz jego dorobek naukowy. Wszystkie informacje o Kempistym pochodzą z następujących głównych źródeł:

This isnotabout the symbolic manipulation of functions so popular these days. Rather it is about the more abstract, but infinitely less practical, problem of the primitive. Simply stated:Given a derivativef: ℝ → ℝ, how can we recover its primitive?The roots of this problem go back to the beginnings of calculus and it is even sometimes called “Newton's problem”. Historically, it has played a major role in the development of the theory of the integral. For example, it was Lebesgue's primary motivation behind his theory of measure and integration. Indeed, the Lebesgue integral solves the primitive problem for the important special case whenf(x)is bounded. Yet, as Lebesgue noted with apparent regret, there are very simple derivatives (e.g., the derivative ofF(0) = 0,F(x)=x2sin(1/x2)forx≠ 0) which cannot be inverted using his integral.The general problem of the primitive was finally solved in 1912 by A. Denjoy. But his integration process was more complicated than that of Lebesgue. Denjoy's basic idea was to first calculate the definite integralf(x) dxover as many intervals (a,b) as possible, using Lebesgue integration. Then, he showed that by using these results, the definite integral could be found over even more intervals, either by using the standard improper integral technique of Cauchy, or an extension technique developed by Lebesgue (see appendix for details).

A classical theorem of Marcinkiewicz states that a function is Perron integrable iff it has one continuous major and one continuous minor function. Using an elaboration of this remarkable theorem three applications are made; to obtain a new proof of a recent characterization of the Perron integral, to proofs of some theorems on interchange of limits and integration and to extend classical existence theorems for ordinary differential equations.
