Nomograms predicting disease-specific regional recurrence and distant recurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma following partial or total thyroidectomy

Abstract: The study aimed to establish effective nomograms for prediction of tumor regional recurrence and distant recurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients after partial or total thyroidectomy. These nomograms were based on a retrospective study on 1034 patients who underwent partial or total thyroidectomy for PTC. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability of the nomograms were evaluated by the concordance index (C-index) and calibration curve. In addition, a validation cohort was included at the… Show more

“…Most PTC patients at the early stage show a favorable prognosis after treatment with thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine [ 4 ]. However, the recurrence is greatly increased if metastasis exists [ 5 ]. Hence, it is still important to understand the molecular mechanism of PTC progression.…”

“…The relationship between age and recurrence is therefore complex. Those patients at the extremes of age are at the highest risk of recurrence and an age cut‐off of 45 years does not seem appropriate …”

“…Nomograms have been used in most cancer types in recent years [25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32] , including for ccRCC [33][34][35] . However, there has been a lack of overall evaluations of the developed nomograms, or the variables used for prediction have not been readily available.…”
